Physicist and Ph.D. employed as associate professor in a project with the aim of establishing a better understanding of the optical properties of components with characteristic dimensions in the nanometer regime. The focus is on nanowires, micropillars and related structures. Nanowires are mainly used in LED display technology where micropillars are promising candidates for single-photon sources. These sources are of interest for research in quantum information and cryptography. The daily work consists of developing new methods and software that can simulate Maxwell's equations in these structures. Subsequently the structures are analyzed and new improved designs are suggested. The project involves a number of European universities providing experimental facilities. Results are disseminated by publication of articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, by presentations at international conferences and by teaching of students at the institute.
